Your voice is transcribed on your Mac. Rewriting sends text to the AI provider you choose.

Updated October 22, 2026 · Covers the Dictidy app and dictidy.com.

The app, at a glance

Dictidy is an open-source Mac app maintained by @danb235 and contributors. You do not need a Dictidy account. The app has no telemetry or analytics, and it does not send your dictations or rewrites to a Dictidy-operated server.

DataWhat happens to it
Microphone audioProcessed on-device by Whisper. Audio stays in memory, is not saved as an audio file, and is not uploaded.
Plain dictationTranscribed on your Mac. No AI provider key is required, and transcription works offline once the speech model is downloaded.
Rewrites and Dictate + CleanThe source text or transcript and configured instructions are sent over HTTPS to Anthropic or OpenAI, according to your selected model. Cleanup is online.
API keysStored separately in macOS Keychain. Each key is sent only to its respective provider.
Settings and instructionsStored in macOS preferences on your Mac. Instructions used for a rewrite are included in that provider request.
Saved historyEnabled by default. The newest 100 entries, including text before and after a rewrite, are saved locally in a JSON file.
Most recent resultKept in memory for Paste Last Text during the current app session, independently of saved history.

Your controls

Turn off Keep history in Settings → General to stop saving future entries. This does not remove existing entries: use Clear History to delete those separately. Clear History also clears the recent-result buffer; quitting the app clears that in-memory buffer.

History is stored in ~/Library/Application Support/Dictidy/history.json. It is readable text, not encrypted by Dictidy. macOS account protections, disk encryption and your backup settings determine who else can access that file. Clearing it in Dictidy does not remove copies in your backups or text already pasted into other apps.

You can remove provider keys in Settings and revoke them with the provider. You can also revoke Dictidy’s Microphone and Accessibility permissions in macOS System Settings. Accessibility access lets Dictidy copy selected text and paste results; the app does not record keystrokes.

AI providers and other network requests

Anthropic and OpenAI process rewrite requests under their own terms and privacy practices. Dictidy’s OpenAI requests set store: false, but that is not a promise of zero provider retention. Provider logging, retention and account settings still apply. Review Anthropic’s API retention guidance or OpenAI’s API data controls and your provider agreement before sending sensitive text.

The app downloads its speech model from Hugging Face and checks GitHub for updates, at most once per 24 hours on launch and when you request a check. Downloads, update checks and provider model-list requests expose ordinary connection information, such as your IP address, to the service involved. These requests are separate from dictation audio and rewrite text.

Text pasted into another app is subject to that app’s data handling. Dictidy cannot control what another app, website or clipboard manager does with it.

Visiting this website

dictidy.com is a static website hosted on Cloudflare Pages. There are no account, payment or contact forms, advertising pixels or session-replay tools on this website.

The website uses Cloudflare Web Analytics to understand aggregate visits and page performance. Cloudflare adds a small script that reports page views, referring pages and browser performance measurements. Cloudflare documents that this analytics service does not use cookies or browser storage, such as localStorage, or fingerprint visitors. See Cloudflare’s analytics data-collection details. This website measurement is separate from the Dictidy app, which has no telemetry.

Cloudflare receives technical request information, including IP addresses and traffic information, to deliver and protect the site. Cloudflare may use necessary security cookies when its protection features require them. See Cloudflare’s privacy policy for its processing practices. The absence of a marketing tracker does not mean that hosting services receive no connection data.
