Terms and conditions

Free software. Clear terms.

Dictidy is available under the MIT license. This page explains what that means and what to know before using the app.

The MIT license governs the software

You may use, copy, modify and distribute Dictidy, including commercially, subject to the conditions in the full MIT license. In particular, copies or substantial portions of the software must include the copyright and permission notice. This summary does not replace or add restrictions to that license.

The MIT license provides the software “as is,” without warranty, and limits the authors’ and copyright holders’ liability as set out in the license. Nothing on this page is intended to exclude rights that applicable law does not allow to be excluded.

App price and provider costs

The Dictidy download is free, with no Dictidy subscription or word cap. Plain voice transcription runs on your Mac without an API key after the speech model is downloaded.

Rewriting and Dictate + Clean require your own Anthropic or OpenAI API key and an internet connection. API usage is billed by your selected provider under its pricing and terms. A consumer AI chat subscription does not necessarily include API credit. Dictidy does not sell provider credit or control provider prices, availability, limits or retention policies.

Review the result

Speech recognition can mishear you, and AI rewriting can change meaning or introduce errors. Check the output before sending, publishing or relying on it, especially for consequential work. Use text you are entitled to process and consider whether your chosen provider is appropriate for sensitive material.

Dictidy uses macOS copy and paste automation. It works with most standard text fields; compatibility varies between apps and controls. Save important work and review the installation instructions before granting permissions.

Requirements and installation

Dictidy requires an Apple Silicon Mac running macOS 13.3 or later. Local dictation needs an initial speech-model download of about 1.6 GB. Releases are self-signed and are not notarized by Apple, so macOS may require additional approval when you first open the app.

Download releases from the official GitHub repository. The open-source project does not promise a service-level agreement, uninterrupted third-party services or compatibility with every app.
